Tilkens Farm Fresh Fruits & Wolfcarius quality fruit (WFT) are Delhaize's regular suppliers in Belgium. Delhaize was looking for a wider range of locally produced apples to counter imports. So they requested their suppliers to grow a Belgian gala apple. It had to be better than what they were importing from abroad.

Eventually they ended up with ZoukG1 (Gala ONE®)., an early colouring and early maturing mutation from Gala Royal Beaut. Because of the homogeneity of the fruit and the good colouring, these fruits could compete with imports from the South.

A production volume has been determined based on the volume that the stores imported.

WHAT'S NEXT?

  • The total production area proposed by Delhaize has been planted by the two growers.
  • First sale of production started at the end of 2019.
  • If the Belgian consumer appreciates the Gala, there may still be an option for expansion.
